  • Quality Improvement

Practice Governance
Whether in the form of an executive committee or board of directors, the governance structure has specific responsibilities for setting the direction of the practice. It is here that the practice˙s goals are established and monitored, that policies are set which guide management in its activities, and that important decisions are made that help determine the success of the practice. Effective individual and group leadership is essential to keep the organization moving forward.

Strategic Planning
Characteristics of Strong Medical Group Governance

  • Shared vision of group goals and objectives
  • Established and followed group principles
  • Effective and competent physician and administrative leadership
  • Appropriate delegation of authority to management
  • Group, not individual, orientation
  • Business and strategic plans with follow-up
  • Policy-making medical group board

Strategic Planning
The process of strategic planning is an effective way to establish and maintain direction for a practice. The mission, vision, and values of the practice are defined and reviewed. The external environment is assessed to understand the market and its influences on the practice. A SWOT analysis is performed to define the practice˙s internal strengths and weaknesses as well as to understand external threats and opportunities. Critical factors are identified which lead to establishing goals and objectives for the practice. An action plan is developed, and serves as a map to help move the practice in the direction it has established.

Guiding Principles Should Be Specific Enough to Support Decisions

  1. Mission
    • Why the organization exists
    • Services provided, to whom, where, how
  2. Vision
    • The desired future: characteristics, direction, state, strategies for achieving goals
  3. Values
    • Guiding principles and culture of the organization

Management Effectiveness
The primary responsibility of management is to develop and monitor systems that assure that the goals of the practice are met or exceeded. Managers have responsibility for the oversight of day to day operations and finance, as well as for assuring that that personnel is effective and efficient, regulatory requirements are met, technology meets the requirements of the practice, and that customer service and care are of the highest quality. Physicians and managers must work together as a team, to assure that the practice is successful in both patient care and as a business. The performance of managers can be evaluated, areas of needed improvement identified, and training provided to enhance the managers˙ effectiveness.

Management Effectiveness is measured by...

  • Financial Performance
  • Operational Efficiency
  • Patient Satisfaction
  • Staff and Provider Satisfaction
